Canadian Premiere

Artist Basma Alsharif's first experimental feature is an homage to Gaza and the power of hope over hopelessness. Taking the form of a love story, the film follows a man with a newly broken heart who embarks on a circular journey over a day to shed his pain only to experience it, again and again. His travel weaves together Native American territories, the ancient Italian city of Matera, a castle in Brittany, and the ruins of Gaza into a single landscape. His ultimate failure to understand defeat is at the heart of the human condition - one that leads to failure as it does to survival. This beautifully made film challenges the aesthetics of representing trauma and how we see the Middle East.  Q&A with director to follow.
