Regarded by many as the Palestinian ʺwhite goldʺ, these stones are a highly coveted Palestinian natural resource. The Palestinian stone industry has been largely held hostage by Israeli construction needs, including those of illegal settlements on Palestinian land. At a shockingly unsustainable rate, stone is excavated from villages, towns and refugee camps, creating severe ecological, social and health consequences for residents. Complaints by Palestinian civilians are met with heavy Israeli repression, a lack of interest from international organizations or denial by the Palestinian authorities who are powerless to challenge this rapidly growing industry.
