Completed on the eve of the remarkable youth-led revolution that ultimately ousted President Mubarak last year, Microphone captures the rarely filmed arts scene in one of Egypt’s most vibrant cities. Khaled returns to Alexandria after years abroad to a failed romance and a strained relationship with his father. Deflated, he roams the city and stumbles upon an underground arts culture: Hip-hop performed on sidewalks, female punk rockers on rooftops, skateboarders cruising the city, graffiti artists tagging alley walls. Inspired by this burgeoning sub-culture, Khaled tries to support this movement and draw attention to the newest art forms in Alexandria that are ignored by society but will lead to an inevitable change. This film is a fresh narrative of a new generation of Egyptian artists and their aspirations for their city.
