TPFF x Rabēt Panel Artivism: Mobilizing Change in Palestine

TPFF in collaboration with Rabet presents a discussion inspired by the artistic actions of the Palestinian uprising. This panel will feature Palestinian artists who use their various crafts to highlight Palestinian narratives and mobilizes people, both online and on the ground, towards Palestinian liberation. These artists will share how art, more than ever, is a vital organizing and communication tool - reaching greater audiences and broadening global solidarity. The discussion will examine how art is engaged in political movements; how Palestinian artists are assumed to be political activists; the barriers Palestinian artists face in production processes; and how art communities can show constructive allyship with Palestinian artists and Palestinian liberation.

Join us on Saturday 09/25/2021 at 2:00 PM EST / 9:00 PM Palestine Time ONLINE for a Live discussion with Filmmaker Razan Al-Salah, Writer / Poet Mariam Barghouti, Artist Malak Matar, and Singer / Songwriter Maysa Daw, as we discuss the different mediums through which they have impacted change in their communities.

Razan Al-Salah

Razan is an interdisciplinary artist currently investigating the material aesthetics of dis/appearance of places and people in colonial image worlds, breaking these thresholds of view into elsewheres here, where colonialism no longer makes sense. Her work has been experienced in community-based and international galleries and film festivals. She teaches at Concordia University in Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal.

Malak Mattar

Malak Mattar is fast becoming one of the most prominent Gen Z Palestinian voices in the artworld. Born and raised in Gaza, Mattar’s work reflects the everyday realities of those living there. She was first inspired to create art when she was 13-years-old, to release the negative energy, anxiety and terror that she felt. Bold, impactful colours are used in Mattar’s work, to largely reflect female experience in Palestine.

TPFF Young Pals: Tatreez Workshop with Amnna Attia

TPFF presents its third annual program designed specially for youth. This hands-on craft workshop led by Amnna Attia will teach the artistic and cultural tradition of Palestinian tatreez, including the intricate motifs, storytelling preserved in every stitch and the techniques required to make them come to life. . Participants will embroider fabric with colourful Palestinian symbols and continue practicing their skills at home afterwards. All materials are provided and no previous experience is required.

Amnna Attia is a Toronto-based artist studying at the Contemporary Arts Department at Etobicoke School of the Arts. Attia explores her Arab-Palestinian heritage through digital art and embroidery. Her interest in her personal heritage sparked a passion for learning about other cultures, exploring their customs, and what makes them unique including styles of artistic expression. Attia has curated for the Albright Knox Museum’s 2021 The Presence of Absence exhibition and The Fearless Artist Pop Up Gallery. Her work has been exhibited in group shows at the Gladstone Hotel, Albright Knox Museum, Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Neilson Park Creative Centre, and the Virtual Art Gallery of Experiences Canada. Her work has been published in Ultraviolet Magazine, the Growth Virtual Zine, Arts Etobicoke Impact Report, Toronto Six Hundred Magazine, Original Magazine and will soon be published in the Toronto Public Library and Opaline Magazine.
