Land of the Story is an insightful documentary by Rashid Masharawi. Elia, his father and his son are three generations of Armenian photographers from Jerusalem who have photographed the historic city from within and outside its walls since the British mandate until today. Their cameras’ lenses, and the scenes they captured, document life in Jerusalem and all its political, geographical, cultural and demographic changes. Elia shares with Masharawi the archived photos in his shop along with the stories of Jerusalem that they behold. The historical narratives are juxtaposed with scenes and testimonies of present day Jerusalem, a city that has been transformed by decades of occupation and settlement expansion. The film is a revealing reflection on Jerusalem, one of the world’s most historic and fought over cities.
